After 27 years teaching preschool, kindergarten and special education, I have been moved to teach 4th grade general education. As a book enthusiast, my intentions are to expose my students to a stimulating array of books to encourage my students to love reading. In addition to books, I believe that creating an inspiring milieu with shelving and rugs and other resources will add to the classroom library atmosphere. I want to create this space to be the heartbeat of our classroom, as it will reflect the importance of literacy in their daily lives. I am requesting shelf file boxes a carpet, Guided Reading collection O and P, Diary of a Wimpy kid series and many other books. The reason I am wanting to create this unique space in my classroom is that as space becomes a premium at our school, our library has been relocated from its original building to classroom and now to a mobile library. Our students must wait a week and sometimes two before they can visit the mobile library. A classroom library would foster a love for reading as well as give the students immediate access high quality books daily in the classroom environment. I strongly feel that that classroom libraries are essential to each classroom. I know that one day these books will fall apart, but I ask, is there any better death for a book than having been read too much? Personally, I think not.
