If you read any newspaper regarding technology and education, you will see examples of students who are using every kind of digital medium to enhance their learning experiences. This is improving their digital literacy skills and enabling them to compete with peers across the country and the world when they reach higher education and the workforce. However, this digital proliferation has not entered every classroom. I've worked diligently to help my students to become more media and technology literate. I've created a Google classroom site, as well as a website where they can always access and download the work. However, a major barrier to the utlization of these tools is technology itself. I don't have laptops in my classroom for my students to use during class to practice these skills. I must rely on the computer labs in the library, students using their phones, or my students accessing the public library in their neighborhoods. This is a major hindrance to their learning. If I managed to secure the Chromebooks for my classroom, my students could use not only the resources that I've designed for my students' unique needs (Google classroom and a Google site), as well as use a number of other learning websites, such as Flipgrid, Socrative, Storyboard That, and Clever to name a few. Students will use Google Docs, Slides, and Sheets to create, edit, and share products like a digital native. Some of my students never used a computer before coming to the United States. They deserve access to technology so they are given the same educational opportunities as every other student in America.
