During our Independent Reading Workshop, the children have at least 30 minutes to independently read books at their independent reading level. In my classroom, there are limited amounts of books that engage my students. As a new teacher, I only have the books that were left to me by the previous teacher or books that were borrowed from other teachers in the building. Many of these books are old, damaged, or way beyond my student's reading levels. Most of my students do not have access to books at home, so I would love to provide my students with a multitude of books that they can choose from while they are in my classroom. Third grade is a time when students start reading more chapter books rather than picture books. I have noticed that if I can hook my students on a character that they can follow through many books, the more excited the children are about reading and look forward to reading during Reading Workshop.
