Math is sometimes tricky for students. Hands-on activities can make learning math concepts easier to understand. Many manipulatives that are utilized in the elementary setting like pattern blocks and linking cubes are often not used in math instruction in the middle grades. Students need to have hands-on activities to increase their understanding of math concepts even as they enter the middle school years. We are even seeing that compasses and protractors are not being used any longer. Manipulatives such as pattern blocks and linking cubes are as important during the early teen years as they are in elementary school, because these are the years that students develop the skills that carry them into high school. These math tools and manipulatives will be used to give my students the hands-on experiences they need to be successful when learning geometry and other math concepts in our classroom.
