As with many schools, we simply don't have enough computers to go around. The skills that you need have when using a computer are much different from an iPad. Often times, when testing begins, we are not able access to the computer labs altogether. In today's technology age, teachers need to be teaching our students the skills to succeed in a world run with and by computers. During the day, my students do not have frequent access to computers for learning basic skills or simply learning typing and basic computer skills. We have a computer lab time once a week and spend much of the time there just learning how to navigate the computer. It is imperative that my students become computer literate and learn skills such as word processing and Internet research. They need to learn how to express their ideas and then take those ideas to the next level of publication or presentations, as they will be asked to do this for the rest of their lives. I would like to eventually receive 10 Chromebooks (I am asking for only 3 chromebooks now) for my class so we can use them in our own classroom, whenever we need them, not as the computer lab schedule dictates. We will then be able to start working with work processing programs and Google Docs. for now, we will be using these 3 Chromebooks to hone our word processing skills, to aid us in as well as in depth research, and creating original “professional” looking presentations for our daily learning and projects. This will help to prepare our class for high school, for higher education, and today’s society of technology users.
