My first grade classroom is made up of enthusiastic readers. All of my students love listening to a good book. While we try to read together as much as possible, it would be wonderful for students to be able to listen to books on their own. A listening center, with an easy to use CD player and books on CD, would give students the opportunity to dive into a good story at any time. Having access to quality books on CD will make a tremendous difference to my growing readers, especially my English Second Language Students. My first graders are still developing their ability to read independently. A well stocked listening center will give them a way to access material on their own. Being able to hear the words read to them reinforces their phonemic awareness and phonics skills while giving them an opportunity to experience the joy of reading in a fun and entertaining way.
