Our students spend many hours studying and learning how to complete complex math problems. They understand how to do word problems but they don't realize the important skill that those problems are trying to teach--the ability to problem solve. More than ever students are expected to think and solve and explain their thinking. Chess allows students to gain confidence in their ability to problem solve while having fun! Students who may not feel confident in math are willing to play a game and that will ultimately help them to improve in their learning. They can transfer their idea of strategy to math problems. Students may not even realize that they are using critical thinking and problem solving skills while they are playing but as we discuss strategies and mistakes, students begin to realize that there is more to chess than just a game.
