My students are bright and energetic. Their academic abilities range from students who are on Individual Education Plans (IEPs) to students who are Talented and Gifted (TAG), as well as a host of skills and abilities in all subject areas. They are eager to learn when the material being taught is thoughtful of their ethnicity and academic needs. A blended classroom in more ways than one - they are fourth and fifth graders of varying ethnic backgrounds. They are Latino, Vietnamese, Romanian, Somalian, African American, Native American and Caucasian. This combination is reflected in our total school population, which is approximately 33% White, 31% Hispanic/Latino, 17% Asian, 12% African American, 6% multiple races and 1% Native American. We are a Title 1 school with a Free and Reduced lunch rate at just over 84%. The school is in a neighborhood in Oregon which is historically high poverty. Many of my students have never been outside their neighborhood save for school field trips.
