Kindergarteners are just learning how to read independently. Books that capture their attention and get them excited about reading are key. But, the books also need to be accessible, which means they need to be at the appropriate level. By organizing our independent reading books into levels in color-coded boxes my students can easily identify which labeled box of books is at their level. Then, they can explore their level for titles that they find interesting. Easy-to-access boxes for each level will help our students to explore their reading resources. Organized reading levels are especially important for our students because they are learning a second language and they can face unnecessary frustration if they struggle with text that is not only in a new language but is also too difficult. Simply being able to identify texts that are not too challenging and not too easy means that students achieve reading success and positive experiences sooner.
