As we are situated within viewing distance of a large wind farm, this project will provide students with a relevant opportunity to learn about renewable energy. It will also allow them to incorporate math and engineering concepts as they experiment with creating peak energy output from a wind mill. First, this project will make the rather abstract concept of electrical power generation more concrete and hands-on. Students can physically construct a working wind generator and put it into use. Second, students can apply engineering and math concepts as they will have the ability to make adjustments to the generator and measure the resulting electrical output. Finally, this project will have immediate relevance given our close proximity to a working wind farm. The classroom photo provided with this proposal shows students creating working solar ovens. This project would provide another avenue for students to explore further renewable energy resources.
