One of the most exciting moments in our classroom is when we are able to share new literature together. Students in our classroom are exposed to and are acquiring new vocabulary, phonics, and phonemic awareness skills in an exciting, approachable way through the use of beloved fairy tales, new fictional stories, and informative non-fiction texts. We want to continue nurturing this love of learning through the implementation of Tara West's Firstie Literacy curriculum and use of her mentor texts. Mrs. West's curriculum is a multi-faceted, standards-based, balanced literacy approach which uses mentor texts to highlight text features and instruct students in all areas of English Language Arts. Each week's lesson highlights a new mentor text. Your donation will go towards the purchase of these mentor texts which will be used in all of the First grade classrooms at our school.
