The materials and supplies we are requesting will go to help two special education classrooms with our school garden and pumpkin patch. Our school focus this year is on project based learning. Project based learning is a fun interactive way to enrich students learning by providing them with real life situations. A lot of students in our classes don't always get opportunities to enjoy activities such as planting a garden or watching a flower grow. Every child deserves to enjoy lives simple pleasures such as these. With your help, we will be able to create a love for nature and science. Please consider helping us reach our goals and provide a rich learning environment for our kids! Every year our pumpkin patch gets overgrown with tall weeds and grass over the summer. Last year it impacted some of our pumpkins. The tall weeds broke some of the pumpkin vines as they grew taller and taller. We have turned the problem into a learning opportunity! This year, we decided we needed to kill all of the grass to prepare our pumpkin patch. We wanted to do this naturally. We collected boxes, large pieces of cardboard and newspaper clippings. We raked the pumpkin patch, laid the cardboard out and soaked it with the hose. Next, we laid a tarp over top of the wet paper. We had a big windstorm last month and are in need of a new heavy duty tarp to protect our pumpkin patch in the off months. We are asking for seeds to plant in our patch and a watering can for the students to help water it too. We are asking for a fence to protect our pumpkin patch over the summer from animals and trespassers.
