Currently, our Cybrary's copy of The Outsiders is tattered and torn (with the cover falling off). Although this can be a distraction, the students LOVE reading this novel! They relate to it in that there are friendship issues, gangs, violence, etc., and the students are all actively engaged while not only reading The Outsiders but thereafter during the assignments and projects that they execute. First, the students are introduced to Hinton. They then learn about what was going on during the time that Hinton wrote the book and why she did so. During reading, the students find personal connections to the characters and climate of the book. Aside from various writing assignments, students also create vivid artwork to go along with their writing!
