These STEM kits will be used frequently throughout the year. Some of the kits use problems faced in stories (Like Goldilocks and the Three Bears) and ask us how we could solve that problem (baby bear's chair breaking). By purchasing 4 of each kit, I would be able to have my entire class working in groups to solve 1 problem. We can then put each groups' work to the test and determine which one out of the 4 would be the best solution. These students are our future engineers, architects, construction workers, builders, etc. I realize we are only 5 and 6 years old but the sooner we can start recognizing problems and finding creative solutions for them, the more equipped these children will be to solve real life problems in the future. This will also help us build our communication skills, help us learn how to work as a team, what failure and success both feel like, and how to persevere when we get stuck. We will be able to have meaningful class discussions about what worked, what didn't work, what we could try next time. Drawing our designs into our science journals and writing about them would be a great way to extend our learning across subjects. The possibilities are endless.
