Flexible seating, with a focus on fidgeting, allows my students to take ownership of their learning process. Currently, my students have very few options other than the standard chair and desk. Confining growing students that are not used to the middle school structure results in extra distracting energy. By giving students choice and tools, student engagement noticeably grows. The items I have selected are adaptive to both whole group and independent work. We utilize hand fidgets to aid in developing deep thinking and quiet listening skills. Seat cushions adds another dimension to hard class chairs helping students with muscle or sensory issues. The cushions can also be applied as extra floor seating during independent work. Kick bands help get out extra wiggles while encouraging students to safely sit in their seats. I have seen how choice and non disruptive ways to fidget can positively affect my students and know these options will help my students grow even more.
