Young children learn naturally through their play. In today's world, there are limited opportunities for children to engage in open-ended outdoor play. By providing students with these unstructured building materials, we are fostering their abilities to think outside the box. Their play becomes much more purposeful as children work together to build large-scale structures. Research shows that children who engage in unstructured, yet intentional play learn skills that will last a lifetime. Persistence, cooperation, problem-solving and critical thinking are all vital skills needed to be successful in our 21st Century world. Having the opportunity to engage with these open-ended building materials is the perfect example of the type of play that is crucial for child development. With the skills learned from these types of experiences, students are prepared for their future and ready to take on the world.
