Jedi Academy gives my students the opportunity to calm their minds by practicing meditation and engage in physical fitness and exercise by doing yoga and learning swordsmanship. It also gives them an outlet for their natural desire for fun and physical activity in a safe and supportive environment. The yoga mats will be used for meditation as well as yoga. Meditation and yoga are new to many of my students and even a few minutes of doing them can be eye-opening to them. For many of them, school is the safest, calmest, most welcoming and nurturing place in their lives. The yoga mats will allow them to comfortably experience what it means to focus and let go before a pseudo-competitive activity. The lightsabers will provide students with a physical and competitive activity that isn't overly about violence but rather about concentration, patience, strategy and respect. Lightsaber dueling provides a window into many other hobbies and areas of interest such as fencing, choreography, and costumed performance and swordsmanship. The Jedi uniforms will help them feel like they are part of something upstanding, communal, and important while they practice. In addition, anything related to Star Wars is good for kids. It's about fun, love, adventure, loyalty, heroism, betrayal and redemption. It's about rising to become more than you are and your connectedness to all things. Imagination is one of the most important things to encourage in a child or, in fact, anyone. If this can in any way continue to foster and encourage their sense of imagination and adventure then I think that's a good thing.
