My district is over 95 percent economically disadvantaged and in addition to this status, many of our students coming to fourth grade experience difficulties in reading that might often times seem to hard to overcome. This novel explores the theme of self-identity in a classroom of unique individuals with different challenges and how the classroom can foster a safe environment where one feels cared for and challenged to be their best despite difficulties faced in their lives. I would love for my students to connect through reading this novel as a class, with the hopes they formulate a bond together and an understanding of how each of them brings a special quality to the classroom.
