My students attend a school with an international studies theme. The population is diverse representing many languages, countries, and cultures. Many of our students are immigrants. As a part of an inner-city district, there is also a high poverty level. Whether natural born citizens or immigrants, it can be a financial hardship to provide extra materials for specialist classes as many families are hard-pressed to provide supplies for their grade level classrooms. My students are eager to learn, and rather than return multiple handouts to them, I'd like to provide them with a journal for their music class. It will be a way for me to centralize and grade each student's work, but more importantly, these notebooks can become memoirs of their musical education.
