“Sit still!” Most of us can probably remember being scolded in the classroom like that a few times. More and more, however, teachers and therapists are finding that may not be the best instructions for their students. Active sitting is based on the idea that it’s not healthy for the body to be seated for long periods of time. Too much sitting still has been shown to lead to back and hip soreness, fatigue, decreased muscle tone and a lack of focusing ability. With the use of wobble chairs and cushions the students will be able to focus during reading group. The wobble stools will be used during small group reading and small group math instruction. The wobble cushions will be used individually for each student. The students will be able to place these cushions on their traditional seat to add a little bit of movement to their day. This is a time that students are asked to work independently or part of a whole group and can't be given reminders as often to stay on task. By implementing wobble seats the children will have the movement to encourage their academics. These movements keep the body more engaged, alleviating the negative effects of prolonged sitting.
