My students need to a have a variety of reading materials in Spanish to choose from in our classroom library. The students need to be able to self-select books that are of interest to them. Beniko Mason in Extensive Reading in English as a Foreign Language states, “The best way to improve in a foreign language is to do a great deal of comprehensible, interesting reading. The case for self-selected reading for pleasure is overwhelming.” Additionally, Steve Krashen, a leader in the field of second language acquisition research, affirms that “Picking up word meanings by reading is ten times faster than intensive vocabulary instruction.” I have accumulated a small collection of books so far for our classroom library, but the collection really needs to be expanded. This project would really get our library up of the ground and into my students hands. The display racks will also help the students in the selection process since they will be able to see the book covers (which help peak interest) and not just the spines.
