Sometimes my middle school students have difficulty finding books that they enjoy reading and identify with. As their English teacher, I am always looking for novels that will excite them. I am looking for books that they cannot put down, books that relate to their own lives, books that will spark a love for reading. Some books I'm requesting include the Who Was series, Brown Girl Dreaming, Piecing Me Together, and The One and Only Ivan. A good book can change a student's life. I want books with strong characters from diverse backgrounds. I want books that encourage themes of tolerance, rising above adversity, and life long learning. I want my students to feel something when they read a book, to actually feel connected with the characters. At times I want the book to inspire my students to do something great.
