Picture a group of 4-5 students sitting around a table in happy, bright orange chairs. The rest of the class is quietly working on independent work with the help of a teaching aid. At the round table, the small group of students work with me in exploring and problem solving new concepts. They are able to ask for help and have tricky concepts and ideas retaught to them as needed. In their small group, students are using algebra tiles and whiteboards. Small group instruction allows students to feel freer to make mistakes, ask questions, and problem solve using the key concept that is being taught. This project is asking for individual white boards, a round table, set of chairs and algebra tiles to provide a place where small group learning can occur. Using algebra tiles students are able to visualize equations and expressions and more deeply understand what they symbolize. High school students LOVE using whiteboards, and they work beautifully in small group instruction. Small group instruction is one of the most powerful tools I have in my teaching toolbox to differentiate instruction and give students more individualized attention.
