The materials I am trying to acquire are needed to create two "Breakout" boxes to utilize in the classroom. The "Breakout" box idea comes from BreakoutEdu. This activity stems from the Escape Room experiences. The idea is that you are locked in a room with clues all around you and you must work to piece together the clues that will eventually lead to a key or passcode that is then used to escape the room. These materials will allow me to create investigative scenarios which give students the opportunity to collaborate and solve problems. Small groups of students will be presented with a box locked with a hasp and a variety of locks: Directional, 2 digit, letters, etc. Through a series of puzzles, clues and challenges, students will discover the codes to unlock each lock and access the final clue and prize inside the box. I will be incorporating geography into these challenges and creating scenarios that use map skills such as using a compass to find bearings, a scale to find distance, and tools of Geography, etc. These challenges will provide them with an answer to one of the locks. For example, students might be given multiple bearings and distances and have to figure out directions in order to find the answer to the directional lock. This activity is an amazing way to use social studies content and 21st Century Skills to engage today's learners. These materials will help my students communicate, collaborate, problem solve, and be creative enough to "Break into Geography!"
