Using their magnifying devices, students will be able to observe defining attributes of rocks in our collections. They will see colors and shapes not otherwise obvious to the casual observer. Up-close observation will help them to better understand mixtures that characterize rocks, including colors, shapes, and sizes of crystals. As scientific observers, they will be better able to appreciate the many uses of these materials in our community. First graders develop literacy by creating words and pictures, and using these magnifiers and sketchbooks will transform literacy development into a "real world" experience . These magnifiers and sketchbooks offer the opportunity to develop unique perspectives as well as provide a special place to preserve visible evidence of their thinking. They will be able to sketch their observations and use a variety of media to add color and expression. They will be able to use text to highlight their understanding. The sketchbooks will serve as observer's journals for the entire school year. Perhaps most importantly, by observing phenomena and then recording their observations and thinking, students will continue questioning and appreciating the world around them, always seeking new perspectives.
