I already had many of the "Leaving My Homeland" books, but wanted to get more to reflect the countries where my current students are from. These books are phenomenal at explaining conflicts, refugee camps, the refugee experience, and resettling to a country, all in ways appropriate for teenagers. These will be used during the ELA unit "Inside Out & Back Again", so students can learn more about modern refugees in conjunction with Ha's journey from Vietnam during the Vietnam War. The other books are world folktales. I love teaching mythology and folktales and would like to focus on stories from my students' backgrounds as opposed to only the Greek and Roman myths. I would like to implement a unit on origin myths, or creation stories, and have them compare the stories of various cultures. All these books are also part of my classroom library, which is on display and from which I encourage students to borrow. These books will truly be a mix of independent enjoyment at home for students and used in my class curriculum. Thank you!
