Zen Boxes in the classroom are geared towards helping students self-regulate emotions such as anger, frustration, anxiety, and stress in the classroom environment. Students will learn healthy mindful coping skills while developing emotional intelligence. The goal is to build a culture of mindful scholars that engage their emotional intelligence to recognize their emotions, accept their emotions, and "let go" of negative emotions and behaviors that impact their academic potential and overall well being. The Adverse Childhood Experience Study or ACE Study indicates that by the time students reach high school, 29% of students in a classroom of 30 have experienced direct and/or indirect physical abuse and/or adult to adult abuse. Physical abuse impacts a student's ability to learn, understand their emotions, regulate their behaviors, and cope with living through traumatic experiences. The Zen Boxes will help students deal with the effects of trauma through mindfulness and sensation awareness. Kinetic sand, squeeze balls, water tubes, mandalas, and fidget toys stimulate sensation awareness through touch, smell, vision, and hearing to calm the body, mind, and spirit through structured therapeutic techniques. One example is the use of a stress ball to "squeeze and release" the emotion (anger) and behavior (off-task) that interferes with learning. These classroom-friendly techniques give students and their teachers tools to let go of emotions and behaviors such as: being off-task, unable to focus, frustration, anger, hyperactivity, hypoactivity, anxiety, and stress. Through your generous donations, mindful scholars will develop the ability to recognize behaviors and emotions that impact their ability to learn AND access tools to "let go" of what negatively impacts their learning. Developing emotional awareness makes a classroom safe, accepting, and relevant to students and teachers.
