As we move towards the Next Generation Science Standards, experiences in the classroom are becoming more focused on student centered learning and collaboration. Students are being asked to use technology as a way to research and analyze data sets, to develop and use models, to collaborate on argument driven inquiry investigations, and to provide scientific explanations. There are many topics in the life sciences where it is difficult to use real models at the high school level, however there are many well executed computer simulations and online data bases that the students could access with these laptops. For example, they could use OCEARCH Global Shark Tracker database to identify patterns in great white shark movements, share the data they collect, and then collaboratively develop an explanation for those patterns. My hope is that these laptops will help provide my students the experiences and 21st century skills needed to be successful in college and career.
