I'm starting an after school art club for children who currently have no arts programming at their public charter middle school due to lack of funding. Rather than taking an elective, students have an extra math or reading class. Art and humanities studies are critical for every young person, no matter their circumstance, so beginning November 3rd, my Art Club will provide an additional outlet for artistic expression and learning. Since announcing this club to the student body, dozens of students have expressed interest and want to join. Most have never taken an art class and would otherwise not have the opportunity to do so. Many students come from low-income families that do not have the ability to buy art supplies for their children and unfortunately neither does my school. I am 100% on my own when it comes to funding this project. Basic supplies can be costly and in order to help every student in my program tap into their true artistic potential, I am seeking your donation, no matter how small. My plan is for Art Club to meet every Thursday after school in my classroom. Each week I will teach a mini-lesson to students about an artist or technique based on their interests. After the lesson, students will have the option to make an art work inspired by that artist or pursue self-driven projects. My goal is to expose students to a wide variety of artists and media, and facilitate an exhibition at the end of the school year where they will be able to show off their work. Please support my students by donating to our club by purchasing art supplies! Every item helps get this much needed arts curriculum off the ground!
