Our sixth-grade class is looking to build their classroom library with new leveled texts. Students began the year with a reading assessment to determine their Fountas and Pinnell reading levels. As some students are discovering their independent reading levels for the first time, we immediately realized that our class does not have sufficient number or variety of leveled texts. It is important for students to have access to a wide variety of texts to ensure that they become good readers. Leveled reading instruction provides students strategies to develop skills that are personalized to their reading levels. In addition to the levels texts, an easel is needed during guided reading groups (and other small group activities). Our classroom only has the traditional chalk boards that cannot be used small group tables.
