My students have a lot of problems that they overcome on a daily basis and this year they have multiplied with the event of Hurricane Irma. On a daily basis the girls flag football team make an effort to do well in school despite countless problems that they incur such as poverty and single family homes. These problems are in addition to the issues that every teenager goes through.
The girls flag football team does not come from privilege. And the school does not always have the resources available to provide the team. Unfortunately, this year, even less resources will be available to them. In October, Miami underwent Hurricane Irma. Irma destroyed many things in the city and while many areas are rebuilding, much of the sports equipment at my school has been destroyed. Through water damage, there have been a loss of uniforms including headbands, shorts and shirts which, if provided would allow the girls to play confidently on game days. Additionally, much of our training equipment has also been destroyed which is why we need sleds, parachutes, ladders, QB trainer nets and footballs to improve endurance and accuracy.
