Play is an indispensable part of all of us. It shapes our brains, opens the imagination, and invigorates the soul (Stuart Brown). Play brings joy and can facilitate deep connections. New school makerspaces are bringing this play back to life, but we don’t want to wait for a “visit” to think like a maker. John Spencer states, “Makerspaces aren’t about the stuff. They’re about the making and the mindset.” Through this grant, I hope to provide all of our 2nd grade students with hands-on materials to create Wonder Tubs. These materials will be reusable year-to-year and used during our soft start time for students to explore play-based learning. This play-based learning will foster creativity and original thinking while providing students positive social and emotional skills. These materials will also be used as our students use the LAUNCH Cycle to explore specific grade level content. We cannot wait to build a portable Lego wall, build with magnetic blocks, and explore animal adaptations with K'Nex.
