Students in 8th grade will dissect Sheep's Brains in order to see the amygdala, hippocampus and prefrontal cortex: regions of the brain crucial for social and emotional processing. We will have Dr. Stephanie Owens come as an expert in neurology to assist with the dissection. She will not only be able to help with the dissection, but she will also be able to teach of more about the complex neurological system. As students who have spent most of their school-aged life at our school developing Social and Emotional processing skills, this dissection will be the culminating project to their understanding and provide a physiological and neurological connection to humans ability to reason, be mindful and thoughtful. Students in 7th grade will dissect fetal pigs to better understand the organ systems that keep mammals thriving. The fetal pigs bodily systems resemble the human system and will help us to visualize human's circulatory, gastrointestinal, respiratory, endocrine, muscular and neurological systems. We have budgeted for every pair of students to share a fetal pig. We will follow a fetal pig dissection manual to dissect every possible organ system within the fetal pig. We have asked for two dye pigs, because it shows both the oxygenated and de-oxygenated blood. We can touch on chemical reactions that take place in the body while looking at the circulatory system. These dissections will allow us to bring our Science and Social-Emotional studies come to life and will benefit the every student in the 7th and 8th grade class!
