A large percentage of our students have experienced and continue to experience traumatic events. In an effort to create trauma-sensitive spaces, our school has created a peace room and is creating space in all classroom to meet the students' social-emotional needs.
Research shows that alternative furniture and manipulatives offer students opportunities to self-regulate their emotions when triggered by stress.
Our school has been certified by our school district as an established social-emotional school, but we don't have all the resources we need to help our students when they are triggered by traumatic events. Imagine students in the peace room engaging in restorative conversations as opposed to being suspended for an outburst in the classroom. Imagine a classroom where a student has the opportunity to disengage temporarily to self-regulate.
"The impact of childhood trauma on biological, psychological, and social disorders can have devastating outcomes on a young person's ability to learn in educational settings." We know that trauma affects our students and, by donating to this project, you are helping to change the narrative.
