This group has begun to excel in Socratic Seminar style oral discussions. Because most of them are going to be the first in their families to attend college, I wanted to introduce them to a text that is college-level reading. We will read the book together, at the same pace, and discuss the themes of it as we go. We will question the author's claims about humanity and humans' relationship with the world they inhabit. I read this book in college for the first time and remember vividly the lively discussions that it generated among my classmates. I not only want my AVID kids to get to college but have success when they get there. My hope is that this book can be a resource that contributes to their future success.
