Math is everywhere! My students love learning and enjoy using manipulatives during math instruction. A Rekenrek is a math rack/tool designed by Adrian Treffers, a mathematics curriculum researcher at the Freudenthal Institution in Holland. It is made up of two rows of ten beads, five red and five white beads. The Rekenrek allows students to practice counting and to make mental images of numbers. It provides and opportunity for a hands on approach when teaching math to young children. This type of tool will support my little mathematicians with the visual models they need to discover number relationships in the classroom.
