My students have a variety of sensory needs. Having a choice of seating options that are easy to clean and comfortable is essential to a well-run early childhood autism room. I hope to use this space daily with my students both as a group, and for individual breaks from the group.
Letting the students relax and process information in a safe, clean, and comfortable area helps them to do their best during the rigorous expectations of the day. I am looking to purchase bean bags, a low-sitting rocker, and a cozy chair with ottoman give the sensory space a warm and comforting feel. All of these items will be used in a quiet space in the room meant to help my students relax and feel comfortable. Children with autism tend to get over-stimulated from the expectations put on them or from something like a sound that they hear. Having space in the room can give them that input they need to be able to calm down and refocus before returning to their work.
Each day, after we participate in gross motor activities, we turn the lights down low and sit in the sensory space before returning to academics. I saw an increase in my students' ability to participate in academic activities when their sensory needs are met. Completing this project will help make this area an enriching and comforting area in their classroom.
