My special needs students work hard in school and try their best. They earn stickers on a badge for hard work, doing their homework and good behavior. They love getting a check for doing the "right thing." For so long these students didn't feel "smart" or hear a lot of positive reinforcement. When they come to me they KNOW they are valued, loved, and are capable of doing anything they set their mind to. Small rewards such as a small car or a ring will make their day. They know when they get 10 checks they get to pick something out of the "prize box." I also will use some of the prizes for other students in the building who are doing the "right thing" as a surprise for them. If you've ever seen a child's face light up when they get to choose a prize, you know how special that is.
