The items that I am purchasing are book sets that have been leveled by the Fountas and Pinnell leveling system. This is the same leveling system that is used with my students to find their independent and instructional reading levels. This project is specifically for 89 books on the reading levels of my first grade students. There are 20 book titles in levels E, F, G, and H. There are 8 books titles that level I. The students will take home a bag of books each week that contain 1 book that is 1 level below their independent level, 3 books that are on their independent reading level, and 2 books that are on their instructional level. Sending home this mixture of book levels will allow for student to practice for fluency as well as give them books in which they can apply the reading strategies taught to them during class. These books will be used in the classroom as students work in small groups, independent reading time, and read to partner times. The books will return to school and be changed for new titles each week as the student's grow in their reading levels. As students work toward reaching the reading goal that they have set for themselves, they need a vast resource of reading material to use to increase their comprehension, fluency, and reading volume. My students need these materials in the classroom as well as at home. Some students do not have access at home to books other than the ones they bring home from school. Each student needs books to read at home to improve their reading fluency and comprehension. Research shows that a high reading volume is linked to future success. These books would help increase each child's reading volume.
