Project Description: Art and film are part of a creative process, and can be performed both independently and collaboratively in varying degrees. With a creative, innovative space, students will be inspired to story board, collaborate, write, research, and share their voice on a classroom -made stage. With a versatile writing desk, cushions for diverse seating, and microphones, students will be inspired to reach an audience and change conversations through social justice. This project combines the Visual and Performing Arts Content Standards for California Public Schools, as well as Perception, Creative Expression, Aesthetic Valuing, and Connections, Relationships, and Applications. In addition, it addresses socio-emotional development and the area of Mental Health and wellness, important in the lives of our youth. Directing change in conversations through social justice, weaves together the rigor of the content standards for technology, collaboration, authentic reading and writing, listening and speaking, and mathematics. I want to educate my students about critical health topics through the medium of film and promote social justice by changing conversations in schools and communities. Through the facilitation of mental health lessons, students will get involved in Directing Change, by creating films in the movement to advance mental health for all, and advocate in their local community, to support and improve the lives of the millions of Americans who face mental illness every day.
