In an effort to create a comprehensive counseling program at BSH, the school counselors are teaching college and career lessons in the study skills classes. Our goal is to help every student identify and develop career and college goals for life after high school. By connecting a student’s future to the work they are doing in high school, we are hoping to see an improvement in graduation rates. If students can see value in what they are learning and connect it to their goals they are more likely to be successful in high school. Increased student engagement and motivation is key to academic and behavioral success. To increase engagement in the classroom we create interactive and collaborative lessons. For example, students play The Price is Right (the white boards will be used for students to write answers) guessing on cost-of-living questions. For many of the activities students can earn candy for participation or correctly answering a question. By simply offering candy we have seen an increase in classroom engagement and motivation. With a student body of close to 1,900 it has become impossible for our counseling department to supply rewards during our study skills lesson. Your support will help us keep students engaged in learning more about themselves, their goals and how to achieve those goals.
