I am a first-grade teacher in South Los Angeles. My school population is considered a low socioeconomic disadvantaged area. My school, unlike most schools, does not have an on-campus library, and the classroom books are outdated and damaged. Many of the books in my library have had to be discarded due to wear and tear. Several books are missing cover pages and pages. Due to this fact, I was only able to provide my students with 2-3 books each. Studies show that beginning readers should have 10-12 books inside their reading bags at a time. Many of my students are behind and low-performing. According to the Department of Education, the more students read or are read to for fun on their own time and at home, the higher their reading scores, generally. However, in the United States, more than 60% of low-income families have no children's books in their home. Hence, children growing up in homes with at least 20 books get 3 more years of schooling than children from bookless homes, independent of their parents’ education, occupation, and class. Evans, M. D., Kelley, J., Sikora, J., & Treiman, D. J. (2010). My goal is to foster a love for reading, improve literacy rates, and provide a global experience to my students through literature. McRae and Guthrie ( 2012) stated contextual support is extremely valuable for gaining reading proficiency, they suggested that, while explicit instruction and appropriate texts are valuable, an often-overlooked factor is motivational support.
