I have a vision of having the 1st grade students plan a celebration of their success. At different points in the year (maybe middle and towards the ending) they would plan a day where they would invite their parents/guardians to the classroom and the students would explain to their parents how they have grown academically and how and in what they need to continue to grow.
The basis of this celebration begins with creating digital portfolios on iPads for the students to share. iPads are a great vehicle to share information digitally and something most students are familiar with. Even if the parents/guardians cannot attend (as often happens in our community), the students can still share their digital portfolios at home. 1st graders have the courage to experiment with unfamiliar programs with great success. Even by giving them the opportunity to post their successful works will drive them to meet the minimum proficient requirements.
The online digital portfolio showcases the student's work in different ways. It could be a picture of their art work or writing, a voice recording of their reading, a video of a presentation they do in class. I particularly would focus on the voice recordings because hearing themselves read has a tremendous impact on their fluency. Once a child becomes a fluent reading they are able to focus on understanding what they are reading. By having all their works recorded from the 1st day of school year, the students can see or hear their own growth and be excited about learning.
