We will read this book as a starting foundation for our conversation about the American identity, narrative techniques, and diverse voices. Since our school's textbook and novel choices are limited in scope, incorporating supplemental texts will not only speak to our students of color but also represent the spectrum of writers often hidden in literary corners. Specific culminating examples include personal narratives--using Valeria Luiselli's text as a model of strong narration--and artistic renditions. Since we are a visual and performing arts school, students will incorporate their artistic training. Students will work independently and collaboratively--as is the spirit of our course!
