I recently had a 3rd grader approach me and ask "Mr. Lewis, when can we learn how to play the piano?" My response was, "What makes you want to learn how to play?" and her reply was "I love learning about music, but I want to be able to play it, too." This conversation hit home with me, because I had a similar experience as a child. I decided to take this more seriously, and began to poll our students, asking if a keyboard lab would be beneficial to them. Over 90% of the students who were asked said that indeed, they have always wanted to learn how to play the piano but have never had the means to do so. Learning how to play the piano in my class would allow my students to connect their learning of concepts to actions, and offer them opportunities that they would not otherwise be given. Our students have a desire to put their learning into practice, and connect their learning to experiences in and out of the classroom. A class set of keyboards would make the instruction individualized, so that I could offer individual attention and support to each student in my classroom. My students' musical exploration would reach a whole new level!
