This year I am lucky to have a small Pre-AP class. With a small group, we can do a more in depth assignment that will give them a richer understanding of our material. During 6th grade Western Geography, one of the locations we learn more about is Mexico. We do not only learn the geography of Mexico, but also about its people. We learn about their culture and history that has shaped them as a country today. Reading Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan will give my students the opportunity to look at historical Mexico through the eyes of a 12 year old girl. With their ages being so similar to my students, they will be able to relate to her experiences from the perspective of a young teen. Esperanza Rising will give the students a glimpse into the Mexican Depression and how that event changed many lives forever. The novel will also give the students an example of why many families migrate to the United States for better opportunities. Through this novel study, the class will travel back in time to Mexico during a time where people were fighting for survival while trying to grasp on to the life they knew.
