Older struggling readers get tired of reading books that are written for younger kids, and start to become self-conscious about their peers seeing them read "baby" books. As a result, many of them quit reading altogether. Chapter books written at a lower reading level with stories that are interesting to older students are crucial for engaging these struggling readers. In addition to having access to chapter books at the appropriate reading level, introducing students to a new reading series can create a stronger desire to read as they fall in love with, and get to know characters in a series.
