Many of my students are struggling readings. They either read well below grade level or have poor comprehension skills. Our school only has leveled reading programs for our primary classrooms, but many of my student would benefit from a strong direct instruction reading program. The supplies that I am requesting would provide the students with a much needed set of books that are leveled readers from a proven direct instruction curriculum. The Corrective Reading series consist of four levels for decoding plus four for comprehension that address the varied reading deficits and skill levels found among older students. The headphones will allow the students to practice the skills learned using iPads during our small group rotation. Your generosity will help purchase books and headphones for our students, which will assist with improving their reading fluency and comprehension. In addition, because the series was created for older students, the presentation is age appropriate while the content is at their ability level. For instance, we have an 8th grader reading at a 2nd grade level. By using the Corrective Reading series, this student's confidence won't be shattered. The wording of his book will be at his instructional level but the cover and illustrations within the book will be of student's his age, engaged in sports and other age-appropriate activities.
