My students come from low income families and are sometimes homeless or living in overcrowded apartments. They don't have books at home and are struggling in every subject at school because of their low reading levels. Some of these 13 year olds are reading at kindergarten level and many are reading at 1st and 2nd grade. Our school library handbooks for middle schoolers that are too hard for them to read. I am trying to create a classroom library and reading environment that will create a love of reading for my students. My students have already started reading the books that I have personally purchased and have actually been asking for more books. This is the first step in teaching literacy. Please donate so that I can help these students learn to read and hopefully continue in school past 8th grade.
