Ethnic Studies focuses on three simple questions: Who am I? Who is my family and community? What can I do to bring positive change to my community and world? This course allows students to explore, discuss and debate some of today's toughest issues including race, religion, crime, poverty, land use, incarceration, drug abuse, sexuality, economics, equity, fair housing, social services, freedom, etc. Students will be given the tools to examine and transform their lives of themselves and make social, economic, and political change for their community. I want each student to have their own copy of The Tattoo book due to COVID-19 sharing restriction. The Tattoo, by Chris McKinney, provides an outstanding, gritty, and unapologetic look at Hawaii in a narrative format. The characters and situations are real and relatable to my students. We will use this book to discuss the Ethnic Studies topics listed above.
